Economic forecasts have grown increasingly gloomy over the past year, with some experts predicting that America may soon—or may already—be in a recession. Even still, according to a recent Pew Research Center poll, 9 percent of Americans say it is “very easy to afford the things in life” they want. Forty-three percent say it is “easy,” 33 percent say it is “difficult,” and 12 percent say it is “very difficult.” These numbers have changed very little since 2001, when the responses were 7 percent, 43 percent, 36 percent, and 12 percent, respectively.
